    A chemically ordered MAX structure is formed, including an out-of-plane chemically ordered MAX phase (denoted as O-max) and an in-plane chemically ordered MAX phase (denoted as i-MAX). The corresponding MXene obtained after selective etching are O-MXene and i-MXene

The I-max phase is special in that the Transition Metal atomic layer in the I-max phase consists of two different transition metal elements with an atomic ratio of 2:1 and a molecular formula of (M 1 2/3 M 2 1/3) 2 AC. At present, only Al and Ga have been found to form I-max A elements. By controlling the etching conditions, ordinary I-MXene nanosheets can be obtained by etching only the A-atom layer. The M 2 atoms in the A and M atomic layers can also be etched to obtain I-MXene nanosheets containing ordered vacancies in the transition metal atomic layers.
In 2017, Johanna Rosen et al. reported the first member of the i-mxene family :(Mo 2/3 Sc 1/3) 2 AlC. In the transition metal atomic layer of (Mo 2/3 Sc 1/3) 2 AlC, Sc atoms are arranged in order in the Mo atomic layer. After etching, Mo 1.33C nanosheets with ordered double vacancies in the transition metal atom layer were obtained. The low resistivity (33.2 µω m − 1) and high volume specific capacitance (1150 F cm − 3) of the I-MXene nanosheets have attracted considerable interest from researchers. So far, the I-max and I-Mxene families have grown to 32 and 5 species, respectively. Among them, the members of I-MXene family have excellent cycle stability in water system electrolyte, so they have shown excellent performance in the field of water system supercapacitors and electrocatalysis, which has attracted the attention of the majority of researchers.
