MAX phase (including Ti3SiC2, Ti2AlC, etc.) is a new type of machinable ceramic material that attracts much attention

Phase MAX is A new type of ternary layered compound composed of three elements M, A and X. Its general chemical expression is MN+1AXN (where M: pre-Transition Metal, A: group A elements, X: carbon or nitrogen, N=1, 2, 3...). , both metal materials (excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, mechanical processing performance, thermal shock resistance, etc.) and ceramic materials (high modulus, high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.) excellent performance. In the past ten years, this field has been active in the international research, with remarkable progress, and its potential application in the field of energy and environment has been widely concerned. This research group mainly studies the synthesis of MAX phase materials, forming process and sintering technology and mechanism of high purity bulk materials

The material includes more than fifty ternary carbides or nitrides. M stands for transition metal element; A stands for main family element; 

X stands for carbon or nitrogen. The basic formula can be expressed as M(n+1)AXn of which Ti3SiC2 has been the most widely studied. 

Ti3SiC2 was synthesized by Barsoum's group from Drexel University in 1996 by hot pressing method, and its excellent performance was found. 

Due to the unique nano-layered crystal structure, these materials are self-lubricating, highly ductile, electrically conductive and other properties.

 This kind of material can be widely used as high temperature structure materials, electrode brush materials, chemical anticorrosion materials and 

high temperature heating materials. After 1996, research related to this kind of material was widely carried out in Japan, Europe and China.
